Stadium 974, previously known as Ras Abu Aboud Stadium, is one of the 6 new stadiums being built for the World Cup. It is currently still under construction on the shore of the Gulf in the east of Doha. During the 2022 Qatar World Cup, this innovative 40,000-seat venue will host five first group round matches and one Round of 16 match.
For the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup, one of it’s hosting venues will be completely dismantled and repurposed. Modular parts of Stadium 974 will be reused in multiple sporting and non-sporting projects in the future in an attempt to set a more sustainable example in future tournament planning.
According to Fenwick Iribarren Architects, based on the concepts of modularity, mobility, legacy, the stadium will be completely dismantled and repurposed after the World Cup. All of its parts, including shipping containers, removable seats and the roof, will be completely reused after 2022, paving the path for other temporary, visually appealing and cost-effective venues in the future.
