ARGENTINA WORLD CUP team Squad

Two-time winners Argentina head to the World Cup on the back of an unbeaten CONMEBOL qualifying campaign. Their route wasn’t plain sailing however, especially as their first game against arch-rivals Brazil was suspended due to a breach of covid protocols.

In unprecedented scenes in Sao Paulo, Brazilian health officials stormed the pitch after 5 minutes to issue an official notice on three Premier League-based players (Emiliano Martinez, Gio Lo Celso and Cristian Romero) who had broken quarantine protocols.

Even though the game is set to be replayed in September, Argentina still qualified relatively comfortably owing much to their robust defensive set up. This approach is needed in a side that doesn’t perhaps boast the star names of tournaments gone by – apart from the obvious one.

Lionel Messi looks set to play in his last World Cup – the only trophy that has eluded him in a glittering career. Can he conjure up one last display of brilliance and inspire the 2022 Argentina squad to a remarkable victory?

ARGENTINA world cup team coach

44-year old Lionel Scaloni is the relatively unknown manager of the Argentinean national side, having no previous managerial experience at any level before taking up the position. Serving as the assistant to previous boss Jorge Sampaoli, he was initially appointed caretaker following the Chilean’s dismissal in 2018.

However, a respectable third place finish at the 2019 Copa América gave Scaloni more time to lead the country into the same tournament two years later. Facing hosts Brazil in the final, a gritty 1-0 victory saw Argentina lift their first major trophy for 28 years, which was duly followed up by winning the 2022 ‘Finalissima’ with an impressive 3-0 display vs Italy.

ARGENTINA’s football team captain

Not much is left to be said about Lionel Messi. Within the game, he is undoubtedly recognised as the greatest player of all time and is still performing on the world stage at the age of 35.

Despite not hitting the same stratospheric heights for Paris Saint Germain compared with his Barcelona days, Messi is still the main man for the national side. Having netted 9 goals in 16 games through 2021, he was joint top goalscorer in World Cup 2022 qualification and produced a man-of-the-match performance in the 2022 Finalissima.

Messi’s career has almost played out simultaneously with the other all-time great of this era, Cristiano Ronaldo. With both nearing the end of their playing days, this tournament is likely to be the last World Cup for both – a spectacle that football fans from all over the world should saviour.

Will Messi retire after the World Cup?

Messi himself has alluded that this could be his last major international tournament, saying “… surely after the World Cup many things change”. He will be 39 by the time the next finals come along, meaning it’s looking more likely he will bow out from Argentina duty in Qatar.

Is Di Maria retired from Argentina?

Angel Di Maria has announced he will most likely retire from international football after World Cup 2022 is concluded. In an emotional post on Instagram, the 34 year-old revealed his last home game vs Ecuador was “probably my last match with this shirt in Argentina”.

How many major tournaments have Argentina won?

The Argentina national football squad have won two World Cups (1978 and 1986), and have been runners up on three further occasions (1930, 1990, 2014). They have also won an incredible 15 Copa América’s, although most came before 1960.
