South Korea WORLD CUP team Squad

South Korea head to the 2022 World Cup after finishing second in the final qualifying group, just behind Iran. Quite remarkably, this will be their tenth World Cup Finals in a row having been at every tournament since 1986.

Despite this record, their performance at the Finals could be improved upon. Barring their fantastic semi-final showing in 2002 – where South Korea were joint hosts with Japan – they have only advanced past the group stage once back in 2010.

Many of their squad play in the domestic K League, with various others at clubs across Europe. The standout name is Son Heung-min, the Tottenham forward who is the nation’s star man both on and off the pitch. Other prominent players in the South Korea World Cup 2022 squad include Hwang Hee-chan of Wolves and Kim Min-jae of Fenerbahçe.

South Korea Football Team Coach

Since 2018, Portuguese manager Paulo Bento has been manager of the national side. He hung up his boots in 2004, first taking charge of the Sporting Lisbon youth team, where he had just been playing, before landing the top job only a year later.

Despite resigning in 2009 without winning a major trophy, Bento was thrust into the Portuguese national team job. He led the squad to the Euro 2012 semi-finals (only losing to rivals Spain on penalties) but a disappointing 2016 World Cup helped lead to his dismissal soon after.

After taking a series of random jobs with Cruzeiro (Brazil), Olympiacos (Greece) and Chongqing Dangdai Lifan (China), Bento was appointed South Korea manager and has overseen a rather comfortable qualification campaign for the World Cup 2022 Finals.

South Korea Football Team Captain

Son Heung-min will likely go down as one of the greatest players in Asian football history. His consistent displays for Tottenham culminated in winning the 2021/22 Premier League Golden Boot – the first Asian player to win the accolade.

This has elevated Son to stardom in his native South Korea, where all his games are watched by masses of passionate fans. For the national side, he has collected over 100 caps and was made captain in 2018. Son will play a crucial role at Qatar 2022 if South Korea can progress into the knockout stages.

Who is in South Korea's World Cup 2022 group?

South Korea’s 2022 World Cup group contains Uruguay, Ghana and Portugal. They begin their campaign on 24th November vs the South Americans and finish against Cristiano Ronaldo’s side on 2nd December.

Where does Son Heung-min play for South Korea?

Son typically occupies the attacking position on the left for South Korea, depending on which formation they play. He is sometimes employed as a central striker due to his versatility, a role he often engages with club side Tottenham linking up with Harry Kane.

Where did South Korea finish in the 2002 World Cup?

South Korea really took advantage when co-hosting the World Cup in 2002. They finished top of their group and famously beat Italy and Spain on route to the semi-finals where they ultimately lost 1-0 to Germany.
