The Al Thumama Stadium is one of the newly-built Qatar World Cup 2022 venues. The stadium housing 40,000 seats was officially opened on the 22nd of October 2021 with the 49th Amir Cup Final. During the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the Al Thumama Stadium is set to host six group matches, one Round of 16 and a Quarter-final.
Similarly to the other venues built for the Qatar World Cup, the Al Thumama Stadium was designed to celebrate Arab culture and traditions. It’s bold, circular exterior design mimics that of the gahfiya – a traditional woven cap worn by men and boys across the Middle East, symbolising their dignity and independence.
Designed by the Ibrahim Jaihad Architects in line with the Qatar World Cup 2022 sustainability promise, the stadium is surrounded by 50,000m2 of greenery featuring native vegetation and almost 400 trees covering most of the landscape. In addition, the Al Thumama Stadium is set to save around 40% more fresh water when compared to a conventional stadium.
