Belgium WORLD CUP team Squad

Historically, the Belgian national football side have not been one of the leading contenders on the international scene. However, over the past decade, a major shift in player quality has changed expectations placed on the squad ahead of major tournaments.

In what is routinely labelled as the country’s ‘golden generation’, this Belgium side is littered with some of the top names from European football. However, they haven’t been able to reach a World or European final with this current batch of players, and time is not on their side.

The main hub of their team – Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Dries Mertens and Axel Witsel – are all now on the wrong side of 30. As the 2022 Belgian squad head for Qatar 2022, there is a looming belief that this once-in-a-generation group have just one more chance to fulfil their potential.

Belgium world cup team coach

Roberto Martinez has been the man tasked with forming these superstar names into a winning side since 2016. He has achieved respectable positions in major tournaments since then, including a third-place finish at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Having made his name at Wigan Athletic in the Premier League, famously winning the FA Cup against giants Man City in 2013, he went on to develop an innovative, fluid style of football after becoming Everton manager.

This led to the call from Belgium, who appointed Martinez at the age of just 43 – relatively young for an international manager. However, there is strong talk that the upcoming World Cup will be his last for Belgium as he looks to move back into club football.

Belgium’s football team captain

Eden Hazard has been the captain of the Belgian national football team since 2015. Despite there being more obvious choices for the role, i.e. Vincent Kompany who was captain of his club side, Hazard was bestowed the honour due to his sheer brilliance during that period.

His form for Chelsea elevated him as perhaps the best player in the world behind Messi and Ronaldo, landing him a big money move to Real Madrid in 2019. Although things have not gone well for Hazard in Spain, he’ll be looking to recapture the form that won him the Silver Ball (2nd best player of the tournament) at the previous World Cup.

Have Belgium ever won a major tournament?

Belgium have never won a World Cup or European Championships in their history, despite being eligible for every tournament since 1930. However, a population of only 11 million puts them at a disadvantage against larger nations.

When will Roberto Martinez retire from Belgium?

Although nothing has been confirmed officially, Martinez has hinted the 2022 World Cup may be his last tournament as Belgium manager. He said, “It will be the right decision to discuss the future after the tournament. Not for me as a coach, but for Belgian football”.

Who is in Belgium’s World Cup 2022 group?

The 2022 Belgium football squad have been drawn in Group F alongside Canada, Morocco and Croatia for the World Cup in Qatar. Their first game against Canada is on 23rd November.
