Mexico WORLD CUP team Squad

The Mexican national side have quite remarkably reached exactly the same stage of each World Cup for the past seven tournaments – being eliminated in the Round of 16 match on every occasion. They’ll be looking to go at least one round further in Qatar.

Mexico are consistently given a bye to the final group of the CONCACAF World Cup qualification stage as one of the top five ranked teams in that region (a spot they will unlikely lose for the foreseeable future). This usually puts them in a battle with the USA, Costa Rica and Panama for the automatic qualification places.

However, the surprising emergence of Canada made life a bit tougher for ‘El Tri’ who had to make do with second position in the group. But a strong finish to the campaign saw Mexico through who are also guaranteed a place in the 2026 World Cup Finals as co-hosts.

Former Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino is the manager of Mexico. Better known as ‘Tata’ Martino, the 59-year-old has been at the helm since 2019 tasked with winning regional competitions and qualifying for the World Cup.

The Gold Cup was won in his first year, although they lost to the USA in the same competition in 2021 as well as in the inaugural CONCACAF Nations League final.

Martino managed mostly club sides in his native Argentina before somewhat surprisingly landing the Barca job in 2013. His time at the Camp Nou was disappointing however, and he left after just one season without winning a major trophy.

His luck didn’t change when taking charge of the Argentinian national side, losing the 2014 World Cup Final in extra-time to Germany as well as the 2015 Copa América final on penalties.

Andrés Guardado is the current captain of the Mexican national side, a vastly experienced utility player who has achieved an absolutely astonishing number of appearances for Mexico. He will surpass the 177 cap record of former defender Claudio Suárez should he play every game in Qatar.

Guardado is a left-footed, defensive minded player who is now playing for Real Betis in La Liga. Prior to this, he represented PSV until 201 with whom he joined after his first spell in Spain with Deportivo and Valencia. Atlas was Guardado’s club in Mexico, where his career started off playing more as a direct, attack-minded winger.

Why did Mexico host two World Cups?

Mexico was the first country to host the World Cup for a second time when they did so in 1986 (1970 being the first). They took over the responsibility after original hosts Colombia were embroiled in a political and social scandal.

Does Guillermo Ochoa still play for Mexico?

Goalkeeper Ochoa has been a consistent feature for Mexico since 2017, becoming a semi-folk hero with the Mexican supporters for his courageous style combined with acrobatic reflexes. He still plays for the national team and will likely start in Qatar, although at the age of 36 – this may be his last World Cup.

Have Mexico won a World Cup?

Despite playing in 17 Finals, Mexico have never won the World Cup. Their best finish has been the quarter-finals, coincidentally in the tournaments they hosted in 1970 and 1986. One good omen is that they are also due to co-host the next tournament in 2026.
