The Danish national side have enjoyed a recent resurgence in form, reaching the semi-finals of the European Championships in 2020 and also becoming a top 10 side in the world rankings.
Their qualifying route to the 2022 World Cup was a near perfect one, winning every game until their final ‘dead rubber’ match against Scotland. This form puts Denmark in a good position to reach the latter stages, and maybe even cause a similar shock as with their famous Euro ’92 triumph.
As individuals, Denmark are not littered with many of Europe’s star names. However, their fantastic work ethic and team spirit make them a difficult opponent for any side – a spirit displayed with the incredible team reaction to the Christian Eriksen incident in the previous Euros.
Kasper Hjulmand is the head coach of Denmark having taken up the role in 2020. Originally set to replace previous boss Åge Hareide after Euro 2020, Hjulmand still took over in June that year as planned – giving him more time to prepare the team for the Finals and develop the strong team mentality that helped them perform so well.
Hjulmand’s playing career was cut short due to injury, which allowed him to move into coaching at a young age. Starting off as the Lyngby youth manager, he took over the first team in 2006 before moving into the Nordsjælland hot seat after an initial spell as assistant manager.
Here, he won the Danish Superliga in the 2011–12 season which attracted the attention of Mainz. Unfortunately, his time in Germany didn’t go as well as expected and Hjulmand returned to Nordsjælland in 2016 before landing the coveted national team job.
The captain of the 2022 Danish national side is Simon Kjær, a vastly experienced centre-back who has played for some of Europe’s top teams. Currently at AC Milan, Kjær has been a regular for his country since 2009 – collecting well over 100 caps in the process.
At the Euro 2020 Finals, Kjær was a prominent figure in the recovery of teammate Christian Eriksen after he suffered a cardiac arrest in the game against Finland. Along with the medical staff, he was awarded the UEFA President’s Award for his role in the incident.

Christian Eriksen returned to football on 26 February 2022 after signing a short-term deal with Premier League side Brentford. He also played a month later for the national team, meaning he is all set to play again for Denmark as they head to the Qatar World Cup.
The Denmark 2022 squad are due to face Tunisia in their first game at the World Cup on 22nd November. They then face a tough game against champions France four days later, before their final group game against Australia on 30th November.
Denmark had not originally qualified for the tournament, finishing second to Yugoslavia in their group. However, due to the Balkan conflict and subsequent international sanctions, Denmark were granted their spot and amazingly won the tournament after beating Germany 2-0 in the final.
