The Al Janoub Stadium, also known as Al Wakrah Stadium, opened in mid 2019 and will serve as one of the eight game venues for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. This futuristic 40,000-seat stadium will host seven matches up to the quarter-finals.
Designed by the world-renowned Zaha Hadid Architects, The Al Janoub Stadium draws design inspiration from the city of Al Wakrah and its historical pearl diving and fishing traditions. The corpus of the stadium was created as a modern interpretation of the traditional dhow boat hulls turned upside-down and huddled together to provide shade and shelter from the harsh desert conditions.
One of the most important features of the Al Janoub Stadium is its 92-metre retractable roof. Operated by titanium-covered wires, it can be opened or closed within 30 minutes to let in the light and provide shade as needed. In addition to the retractable roof and the ergonomic design of the stadium itself, the venue is equipped with an innovative cooling system to keep the fans, players and officials comfortable in a more sustainable way.

16:00 GMT+0100The Al Janoub Stadium is located around 20 kilometres from central Doha and around 5 kilometres away from the coast of Al Wakrah. The cities are connected by the red metro line, however the fans will have to make their way from Al Wakrah city centre to the stadium by taxi.
Due to the stadium being located outside of the city, there’s little to do in the area, therefore most fans will stay, and enjoy their free time in Doha. For those wanting to stay closer to the venue, a few hotels can be found in Al Wakrah.
Similarly to other Qatar World Cup venues, the capacity of the Al Janoub Stadium will be halved after the tournament is finished. The extra seats will be donated to build stadiums in developing countries, while the stadium itself will become a home ground to Al Wakrah Sport Club professional football team.
