Poland WORLD CUP team Squad

Poland finished second in their qualification group for the 2022 World Cup, pushing them into the playoff route to qualify for the Finals in Qatar. However, their first scheduled game against Russia was cancelled due to the conflict in Ukraine – awarding Poland a ‘walkover’ into the next round.

Against Sweden in front of a packed home crowd in March, the deadlock was broken early in the second half when main man Robert Lewandowski calmly tucked home a penalty. A Piotr Zielinski finish eased nerves soon after to seal the 2-0 victory.

Poland’s World Cup 2022 group gives them hope of advancing to the knockout stages. Although they are drawn to play against Argentina in their final game, they’ll be hoping to have picked up enough points against Mexico and Saudi Arabia to have sealed qualification.

POland Football Team Coach

The man who will lead Poland at Qatar 2022 is Czesław Michniewicz. He joined earlier in the year after the departure of previous manager Paulo Sousa who surprisingly left just a few months before their scheduled playoff deciders.

Michniewicz has extensive experience of Polish football, both as a player and manager. His first roles as head coach came at Lech Poznań and Zagłębie Lubin where he won the Polish Cup and Ekstraklasa title respectively. A succession of jobs at various domestic clubs followed, as well as a stint with the Poland Under 21 side.

In September 2020, Michniewicz was appointed Legia Warsaw manager where he won a second league title and qualified for the UEFA Europa League group stage. Although their domestic form suffered due to this and he was dismissed last year, Michniewicz’s vast experience still made him the best man to take the job for Qatar 2022.

Poland Football Team Captain

Robert Lewandowski’s record speaks for itself. He has been recognised as one of the world’s best strikers for the best part of a decade, breaking numerous records for both club and country in the process.

Lewandowski started his professional career at Lech Poznań before signing for Borussia Dortmund in 2010. Rivals Bayern Munich pounced soon after, where he has scored an astonishing 344 goals in 375 appearances, before moving onto Barcelona at the start of this season.

He was made Poland captain in 2013, and is now both their all-time leading appearance maker and record goalscorer with over 75 international goals.

Will this be Robert Lewandowski’s final World Cup?

Lewandowski will be 34 by the time the 2022 tournament kicks off, meaning it’s more than likely this will be his last World Cup with Poland. However, he hasn’t officially indicated this will be the case as yet, and it wouldn’t be a major shock if we saw him again in 2026.

What is Poland’s record in the World Cup?

In recent years, Poland have disappointed in World Cup Finals. They have only qualified for three tournaments since 1990 and haven’t progressed past the group stage in either. Their glory era came between 1974 and 1986 where they achieved a third place finish on two occasions.

Will Matty Cash play at the World Cup?

English-born Matty Cash is eligible for the national side through his Polish mother. He made his debut in 2021 and has been a consistent feature in the side since. Barring any injuries, it is likely Cash will be included in the Poland 2022 World Cup squad.
