Canada WORLD CUP team Squad

Canada have qualified for only their second FIFA World Cup as they head to Qatar in November 2022. It’s an incredible achievement for the side, especially as ‘soccer’ falls behind other North American sports such as Ice Hockey and American Football in the popularity stakes.

The current 2022 Canada squad is an exciting mixture of youth and experience. For example, there’s 23-year-old Jonathan David of Lille who has already amassed over 30 caps (scoring 20+ goals in the process), whilst Atiba Hutchinson is still going strong at the grand age of 39.

Unlike years gone by, numerous Canadian players are now featuring across some of the top European leagues, week in-week out. This is typified best by the emergence of star player Alphonso Davies who has already played over 100 games for Bayern Munich.

With the future looking bright for Canadian football, another bonus is that the majority of this squad will also play in the 2026 Finals having qualified as co-hosts of the tournament.

Canada world cup team coach

The head coach of Canada is John Herdman – a relatively unknown English manager who has made his way onto the international scene via a rather unconventional route. His first experience came taking charge of the New Zealand women’s national team from 2006 to 2011, guiding the team to various major tournaments.

He stayed in the women’s game becoming manager of the Canadian national side, achieving a gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games and bronze medals at both the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games. These achievements impressed the federation so much that he was offered the job as men’s national manager in 2018.

Any doubts over this surprising move were quickly quashed. Canada moved up to 40th in the World Rankings (their highest ever position) and by qualifying for the 2022 World Cup Finals, Herdman has become the first manager to achieve this feat for both a men’s and women’s national team.

Canada’s football team captain

Atiba Hutchinson is the national captain of the Canadian football team. He is a vastly experienced player, having made his professional debut all the way back in 2002 and achieving over 800 appearances for club and country.

Despite approaching his 40th birthday, Hutchinson is still playing regularly for Beşiktaş in Turkey as well as the national side. This high level of professionalism has seen him amass nearly 100 caps – making him Canada’s record appearance maker.

How did Canada qualify for World Cup 2022?

Canada won the first stage of the North and Central America group comfortably, as well as coasting past Haiti in the second stage. Quite remarkably, they then pipped Mexico and the USA to finish top in the final group and head automatically to the Finals in Qatar.

Is this Canada’s first World Cup?

Canada have qualified for the World Cup Finals before, doing so at Mexico 1986. However, things didn’t go as planned for ‘Les Rouges’ as they lost all three group games without scoring a goal.

Where does Alphonso Davies play for Canada?

Bayern Munich starlet Alphonso Davies usually plays at left-back or left-wing back for his club. However, for Canada, he is utilised in a more advanced position on the left hand side to make the most of his blistering pace and direct approach.
