GROUP STAGE FOR WORLD CUP 2022

Each of the qualifying 32 teams are split into eight groups of four teams.

Each group will have one ‘seeded’ team against three randomly-selected teams. Points are awarded based on win and draw. No points are awarded for a loss.

A ‘seeded’ team is a team based on FIFA Rankings and its performance in previous World Cups. A seeded team is a team that ranks strongly. Seeding is done to make sure that there is a mix of quality in the given teams, and so not all of the top ranking teams end up in one group.

The winning teams from the group stage can move onto the Knockout Stage. In the Knockout Stage, teams play against each other and go for extra time and penalty kicks. No matches can end in a draw.

The Knockout Stage opens with the Round of 16.

WORLD CUP 2022
GROUP STAGE WINNERS

There are 211 FIFA member associations which are eligible to qualify for World Cup 2022. Qatar, as the host country, is automatically qualified to compete in the World Cup. The other countries compete against each other in a qualifying stage that will determine if they compete in the World Cup or not.

The 2022 World Cup qualifying stage winners for Europe are Serbia, Spain, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Croatia, England, and Germany. Other group stage winners for the different leagues include Argentina, Iran, and South Korea. These 32 winners, along with the rest from the different regions around the world, will be placed into the World Cup Group Stage, where each team will play one match each with the others in their group to advance to the Knockout Phase.

At the end of the Group Stage, the top 2 teams from each of the groups will move on to the Round of 16, which is the first round of the Knockout stage. The team that qualifies 1st in their group will be matched in the Round of 16 with a team from another Group that qualified 2nd in their group. This is done to provide incentive for teams to finish first in their own group.

There is also the possibility that two or more highly rated teams will be placed in the same group, resulting in what is known as the ‘group of death’, where multiple teams who are likely to win play against each other in the group stage and a pre-tournament favourite is eliminated before the Knockout Stage begins.

WORLD CUP 2022
GROUP OF DEATH

There have been a few so-called ‘Groups of Death’ in World Cup history. The first Group of Death – and the origin of the term ‘group of death’ – took place at the 1970 World Cup. Mexican journalists called Group 3 of the 1970 World Cup the Group of Death as it had the reigning champion (England) and the eventual winner of the World Cup (Brazil) in the same group.

Since then there have been a few other Groups of Death, though which group ends up being the group of death is typically debated after the World Cup is completed.

The final draw for the group stage will be held in April 2022 and the tournament will then officially start in November.

The Round of 16 plays the winner of each group against the runner-up from another group. For 2022, the Round of 16 match schedule work as seen below:

• December 3rd: the winner of group A vs. the runner-up of group B.
• December 3rd: the winner of group C vs. the runner-up of group D.
• December 4th: the winner of group D versus the runner-up of group C.
• December 4th: the winner of group B versus the runner-up of group A.
• December 5th: the winner of group E versus the runner-up of group F.
• December 5th: the winner of group G versus the runner-up of group H.
• December 6th: the winner of group F versus the runner-up of group E.
• December 6th: the winner of group H versus the runner-up of group G.

The Round of 16 matches will take place in December, from the 3rd of December to the 6th of December.

This is known as the group of death. Group of Death matches play top-ranking teams against each other. One of the teams will be knocked out, which means that a topranking team will not make it to the World Cup 2022 final stage

The first Group of Death – and the origin of the term ‘group of death’ – took place at the 1970 World Cup. Mexican journalists called Group 3 of the 1970 World Cup the Group of Death as it had the reigning champion, the eventual winner of the World Cup and the runners-up in one group.

No. The World Cup started with 16 teams and will expand to 48 for the 2026 World Cup to include more teams around the world.
