Named ‘Education City’ for its location – nestled amongst various university campuses in Al-Rayyan – this stadium is one of the most environmentally sustainable in the world.
Sitting in the outskirts of Doha, Education City stadium boasts a capacity of 40,000, capable of holding a significant number of lucky spectators.
Education City Stadium Background
Education City Stadium has been nicknamed the “Diamond in the Desert” and, much like diamond mining operations across the globe, it has been criticised for potential human rights violations.
Despite this, the stadium officially opened in June 2019, and has since hosted a range of significant football matches.
Four games of the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup were played at Education City Stadium, including the final, which saw Bayern Munich defeat UANL 1-0. The 2021 edition of the Arab Cup was also partially played at Education City Stadium, with a total of five matches held here.
The stadium is located next to various higher education facilities in Qatar, and includes a sports complex in its immediate vicinity that is used by university athletes and as a training facility for professional clubs.
