Wales WORLD CUP team Squad

In qualifying for Qatar 2022, Wales will be playing in only their second ever World Cup. It’s been 64 years since their first appearance in 1958, showing what an incredible achievement this has been from the current batch of players.

Despite the managerial uncertainty caused by the prolonged departure of Ryan Giggs, assistant manager Rob Page stepped up very impressively when asked to guide Wales at Euro 2016 and also in the proceeding Nations League.

After finishing second in their World Cup 2022 qualification group, Wales were faced with two playoff games. In the first against Austria, a brace from their main man Gareth Bale helped secure a 2-1, securing a date against Ukraine.

The delayed game in Cardiff was a tense affair for Wales until a Bale freekick was diverted into his own net by Andriy Yarmolenko. Despite some sustained periods of pressure by the away side, the Welsh Dragons held on to secure their place at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Wales Football Team Coach

Rob Page spent the majority of his playing career at Watford, which included a season in the Premier League, before various other spells at lower league clubs saw him retire in 2011. He took over the reins at Port Vale in 2014 following a spell as assistant manager, and subsequently moved onto Northampton Town before being sacked less than a year later.

Next came the chance to manage Wales Under 21s before becoming the assistant to Ryan Giggs in August 2019. Due to Giggs’s off-the-field issues, Page stepped in as caretaker-manager and has performed wonders guiding the team to their first World Cup in over six decades.

Wales Football Team Captain

Much of Wales’s recent success is down to Gareth Bale who has stepped up to the plate on more than one occasion to help his nation in crucial matches. He has played over 100 times for his country and was named as captain ahead of their Euro 2021 campaign.

Starting his career at Southampton and then moving onto Spurs, Bale rose to prominence when completing a world record transfer to Real Madrid. His early years at the Bernabéu were incredibly successful, and he would go on to win the Champions League five times.

Wales play to Bale’s strengths by using him in a free role up-front, asking him to make only necessary, efficient runs to maximise his undoubted potential as the match winner.

When do Wales play England in the 2022 World Cup?

Wales are scheduled to play England on 29th November in the late kick-off. This is the final group game so could be absolutely crucial in deciding their fate. The teams also met at Euro 2016, with a stoppage time Daniel Sturridge goal giving England a 2-1 win.

Will Bale retire after the World Cup?

Despite Bale appearing to ‘wind down’ his career by moving to MLS side Los Angeles FC, the 33-year-old has publicly stated he now hopes to continue onto Euro 2024 and even beyond should he remain injury-free at his new side.

Can Ryan Giggs manage Wales again?

Despite stepping back from the team, Ryan Giggs was still officially manager of Wales after allegations of domestic assault were made in November 2020. However, on June 21st 2022, he announced his resignation from the position entirely – leaving Rob Page to take full charge of the Wales 2022 World Cup squad. He hopes to resume his managerial career at a later date once the trial is over.
