Saudi Arabia WORLD CUP team Squad

Saudi Arabia’s 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign was impressive, breezing through the second stage to reach the final group which included Japan and Australia. Despite the stiff competition, the Saudis emerged in first position to qualify automatically for the Finals.

Saudi Arabia has a geographical border with Qatar, and because all of their squad play in the domestic Saudi Pro League, this may provide a degree of ‘home’ advantage as the team are more accustomed to the climate and conditions of the tournament.

The Saudi Arabia 2022 World Cup draw wasn’t too kind, however. Due to play Argentina in the first game on 22nd November, they’ll be hoping to avoid a similar result as in their first game of the 2018 Finals where they lost 5-0 to Russia. Things don’t get much easier with Poland and Mexico up next.

Saudi Arabia Football Team Coach

Saudi Arabia have continued a long-standing tradition of hiring foreign managers with the appointment of Hervé Renard in 2019. The Frenchman brings an interesting track record, having managed a variety of domestic and national sides since 1999.

Spending time managing in France, England, Vietnam and Algeria, Renard became Zambia manager for the second time in 2011 and famously won the Africa Cup of Nations a year later. He also won the same trophy with Ivory Coast in 2015 before further spells at Lille and Morocco.

Saudi Arabia Football Team Captain

The captain of the Saudi national squad is Salman Al-Faraj. The 33 year-old also captains his club side, Al-Hilal, where he has spent his entire playing career and won numerous Saudi Professional League titles as well as the Asian Champions League twice.

Al-Faraj plays as a central midfielder, often in a more defensive role, where he attempts to control possession for the team and exert his influence from a deeper position. A regular for the national side since 2010, the Saudi Arabia World Cup side will need all his experience from the middle of the park to perform well in Qatar.

Have Saudi Arabia played in a World Cup before?

The 2022 World Cup will be Saudi Arabia’s sixth appearance at the Finals, having first qualified in 1994 and the following three tournaments. An eight-year hiatus was broken as they returned at Russia ’18, although they didn’t advance further than the group stage.

Is Saudi Arabia close to Qatar?

Qatar is situated in a small peninsula sharing a border with just one other country – Saudi Arabia. The Saudi 2022 national squad will be hoping to use this close proximity to the host country to their advantage during the tournament.

Who is Saudi Arabia’s best player?

Salem Al-Dawsari is rated as one of the best players for Saudi Arabia. He has played over 65 times for the national team, and scored a late winner in their last World Cup game against Egypt in 2018. He has spent all his career at Al-Hilal, winning the Saudi league five times and AFC Champions League twice.
