USA WORLD CUP team Squad

After appearing at six successive World Cup Finals, the USA missed out on Russia 2018 after a disastrous qualifying campaign. However, a new manager and the emergence of some exciting young players helped the squad secure their spot at the 2022 Finals in Qatar.

This batch of fresh, hungry newcomers to the squad include Barcelona defender Sergiño Dest, Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie and Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic. Another wildcard is Timothy Weah, the son of former Ballon d’Or winner George.

The emergence of Canada as a major player in the CONCACAF zone made life a bit harder for the US during qualification. With Mexico to contend with also, they eventually finished 3rd in the group just ahead of Costa Rica on goal difference.

Following the below-par qualification campaign for the previous World Cup, Gregg Berhalter was appointed as the full-time successor to Bruce Arena in December 2019. Despite a loss in the Gold Cup final against Mexico, Berhalter was now dealing with a fresh pool of exciting talent who were emerging at the top European sides.

Wins in the inaugural 2020 CONCACAF Nations League and Gold Cup a year later – both against rivals Mexico in the final – were clear indications that this US team is on the rise. Combined with the successful 2022 qualification period, it will be interesting to see how they fare in the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

The United States of America football team have named various captains in their previous matches – including Weston McKennie, Walker Zimmerman and Tyler Adams – although the man most likely to lead the squad in Qatar is star forward Christian Pulisic.

Pulisic was first bestowed the honour in 2018 when he was just 20 years, becoming the youngest player in USA’s history to wear the armband. In his fourth season at Chelsea, Pulisic spent his earlier career at Borussia Dortmund before the £60 million switch in 2019.
