Switzerland WORLD CUP team Squad

Switzerland were dealt a difficult 2022 World Cup qualifying group alongside reigning European champions Italy. However, remaining unbeaten and only conceding two goals during the campaign would see the Swiss qualify automatically in top position.

The penultimate game between the two top sides in Rome was crucial. An early Silvan Widmer goal was cancelled out by Italy in the first half, putting the teams on course for a 1-1 draw – a result which would favour Switzerland. However, a late foul in the box gifted the Italians a penalty after a VAR review.

Up stepped the usually composed Jorginho… who proceeded to sky the ball over the bar. Switzerland hung on and proceeded to win their next game against Bulgaria 4-0, confirming qualification to the Qatar 2022 Finals after Italy could only draw 0-0 vs Northern Ireland.

Switzerland Football Team Coach

Murat Yakin gained much of his coaching experience from the domestic Swiss leagues, taking charge of such clubs as Thun, Luzern, Grasshoppers and Schaffhausen between 2009 and 2021.

His most successful period came as manager of Basel with whom he won the Swiss Super League on three occasions as a player. As manager, he continued the trend by picking up two more league titles in 2013 and 2014. Despite not being able to replicate this form since, his high reputation within the Swiss game helped him land the top job in 2021.

Switzerland Football Team Captain

The talented but somewhat controversial Granit Xhaka will captain Switzerland at the 2022 World Cup. He is a combative midfielder who can divide opinion both for his country as well as club side Arsenal with whom he has made over 250 appearances.

Xhaka was the former Arsenal captain too, although the honour was rescinded when he reactively negatively after being substituted. He clawed his way back into first-team contention under Mikel Arteta and has enjoyed a good spell of form since – form which has transcended to the national team where Xhaka played an important role in securing World Cup 2022 Switzerland qualification.

Switzerland’s first game is set to be against Cameroon where they will hope to secure three points before two tough challenges in Doha. First up is tournament favourites Brazil, followed by Serbia which may be crucial in sealing their passage to the Round of 16.

Who does Xherdan Shaqiri play for now?

Xherdan Shaqiri is perhaps Switzerland’s most high profile player having earned over 100 caps and scored some important goals in major tournaments. After leaving Liverpool in August 2021, he signed for Lyon but quickly moved on again to MLS outfit Chicago Fire in February this year.

How many times has Granit Xhaka been sent off for Switzerland?

Notorious for putting in a reckless tackle, Xhaka has been sent off five times for Arsenal and picked up countless yellow cards along the way. However, he has only been sent off once for Switzerland in over 100 appearances.
