Spain WORLD CUP team Squad

Spain qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup automatically by finishing top of their European group. Main rivals Sweden had slipped up in their penultimate game against Georgia, meaning qualification was secured with one game to spare.

The Spanish squad is perhaps not littered with some of the world-class names of teams gone by. However, a solid collection of experienced players in each position makes for a formidable team who will be expected to make the latter stages of the tournament, despite being drawn into a tricky group in Qatar.

In defence, the Spain World Cup 2022 squad can call upon the know-how of César Azpilicueta, Jordi Alba and Dani Carvajal, whilst Sergio Busquets and Koke provide a rigid platform in midfield. Up front, 30 year-old Álvaro Morata will be looking to make up for being left out of the 2018 squad in Russia.

Spain Football Team Coach

Luis Enrique first took charge of the Barcelona B side when he finished playing with the Catalan giants. He was offered the Roma job in 2011 but left after just one season following a poor showing in Serie A. Up next was Celta Vigo back in Spain before the Barcelona job became available.

Enrique stepped up to the challenge by winning the La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League treble in his first season. This was backed up with a league title the following season before he decided to step down in 2017.

A year later Enrique became the manager of the Spanish national side – a post in which he actually quit for four months in June 2019 – before rejoining in preparation for Euro 2020. After losing to Italy on penalties in the semi-final, he will be hoping to go one better as the 2022 Spanish World Cup squad travel to Qatar.

Spain Football Team Captain

The seemingly eternal Sergio Busquets is the captain of Spain, taking up the role after the omission of Sergio Ramos in October 2020. This is also an honour he holds at Barcelona after club legend Lionel Messi left for PSG.

Busquets is a captain who leads by example rather than vocally inspiring his teammates. His composure in midfield, even when being hounded by opposition players, is exemplary and he brings an unmatched level of control to Spain’s usual possession-based game.
Busquets has already announced this will be his last year with Barcelona after spending 15 years in the first team. It is also very likely this will be his last ever World Cup with the side.
