Ghana will head to their fourth World Cup as they travel to Qatar in November. After qualifying for three tournaments in a row (2006, 2010 and 2014), it is a welcome return for the ‘Black Stars’ after missing out on Russia ‘18.
The race for qualifying went down to the wire. In a must-win game against South Africa, Andre Ayew’s first-half penalty was enough to seal Ghana’s place in the next stage on ‘goals scored’ after the two sides finished on both the same points and goal difference.
This led to a two-legged playoff tie against Nigeria to seal qualification, starting with a 0-0 draw at home. Despite starting as underdogs for the away leg, an early goal from Thomas Partey set them up to eventually draw 1-1 and advance on away goals.
German-born with Ghanian parents, Otto Addo is the recently appointed head coach of the 2022 Ghana national team. He spent his playing career in the Bundesliga, turning out for Hannover 96 and Borussia Dortmund, and making 15 caps for his country before retiring in 2008.
He has spent the majority of his post-playing days as an assistant manager, which included a return to Dortmund as a ‘talent coach’. He also simultaneously acted as head scout for the national team from 2013-15, and was eventually given the top job after replacing Milovan Rajevac earlier this year.
The captain of Ghana is Andrew Ayew – an experienced forward who has earned over 100 caps for his country, playing in two World Cups and seven Africa Cup of Nations tournaments along the way.
The 32-year-old spent the early part of his career at Marseille, before being snapped up by Swansea City in 2015. West Ham paid a then club record fee of £20.5 million for Ayew after just one season but he was lured back for a similar fee in 2018 – spending four more seasons with the Welsh club, including a loan at Fenerbahçe.
Ayew now plays for Al Sadd in the Qatar Stars League, meaning he will be perhaps one of the best adapted players to the conditions of the tournament.
Ghana were inches away from becoming the first African side to reach the semi-finals in 2010. They were only thwarted by the infamous Luis Suárez handball and resulting penalty miss from Asamoah Gyan deep into extra time. Uruguay went on to win in a shootout.
Ghana have been drawn in Group H in Qatar with matches against Portugal, South Korea and a tasty clash against rivals Uruguay – including Luis Suárez – in the potentially crucial final game.
The Ayew brothers have played together at both Marseille and Swansea at club level, as well as being regular starters for the national side for many years. If both fit, they are likely to both start in attacking positions depending on the formation chosen by manager Otto Addo.
