Germany WORLD CUP team Squad

Barring their disappointing performance at the 2018 World Cup, Germany have reached at least the quarter-finals of each tournament since 1982. It’s almost within their DNA to perform well at major finals, and having qualified with ease for Qatar, you wouldn’t bet against them reaching the latter stages this time around also.

Germany have freshened up their squad in recent years, which perhaps explains the poor showing at the last Finals. However, with mainstays Manuel Neuer, Antonio Rüdiger, İlkay Gündoğan and Thomas Müller still in the squad, there’s still an experienced spine in place combined with a host of talented younger players.

With four World Cups already to their name, the 2022 German squad will be looking to equal the record number of titles set by Brazil. Being drawn in a group with Spain and facing potential banana skins against Japan and Costa Rica, we will learn a lot about this group after their first three games.

Germany world cup team coach

Hansi Flick is the man tasked with replacing long-term manager Joachim Löw, as well as ushering in a new generation of players and transforming them into a winning side. He served as assistant to Löw between 2006 and 2014 before becoming sporting director at the German Football Association for three years.

Without a club for two years, it seemed as if Flick was out in the wilderness until the call came from Niko Kovač to be his assistant at Bayern Munich in 2019. When Kovač left the club a few months later, Flick eventually stepped into the role on a full-time basis where he would go on to win every major trophy possible.

Germany’s football team captain

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has been the captain of the German national side following Bastian Schweinsteiger’s retirement in 2016. He has made over 700 club appearances for Bayern and Schalke, as well as earning over 100 caps for his country in the process.

Neuer’s expansive sweeper-keeper style and brilliant shot stopping ability has seen him win the continent’s Goalkeeper of the Year award five times, as well as countless trophies at domestic level and World Cup back in 2014.

Who plays as striker for Germany?

The 2022 Germany squad have a deep berth of attacking players to call upon, including Timo Werner, Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané, Kai Havertz and Serge Gnabry. It remains to be seen which combination manager Hansi Flick will select in the World Cup FInals.

What happened to Mario Götze?

Götze famously scored the winning goal for Germany against Argentina in the 2014 World Cup Final at just 22 years old. Unfortunately for Götze, his career didn’t take off in the way many expected and he last played for the national side back in 2017.

What was Germany’s World Cup 2022 qualification record?

Although Germany surprisingly lost at home vs North Macedonia in their third game of qualification, they won every other game in their group and breezed through comfortably in first position.
